Te Amo

by Evie Dorsey

Standing shoulder to shoulder

Looking at the night time in the desert

You took me by the hand and held me tight

And I thought I heard you whisper, “Te amo.”

And I saw it in your eyes, “Te amo.”

Walking hand and hand through the arroyos,

Cradled by the rocks and the water,

You put a stone in hand and said, “We are the land.”

I thought I heard you whisper, “Te amo.”

And I saw it in your eyes, “Te amo.”

Riding side by side across the river,

Watching shadows dance with the mountains.

You don’t have to take my hand or hold me tight,

I can always here you saying, “Te amo.”

And I saw it in your eyes, “Te amo.”

And I see it in your eyes, “Te amo.”

Matt Baker was born in Sherman, Texas in 1967. He was raised in Austin, but both his parents grew up in Fort Stockton and trips to West Texas were a common childhood occurrence. He never lost his love for the Trans-Pecos, and became a Terlingua “regular” around 2012. In 2018, he purchased a homestead on Terlingua Ranch, establishing a permanent foothold in the area. He is deeply grateful to the residents of South County for accepting him into their community. Matt co-parents a ten-year-old son, Henry, to whom he hopes to pass along his love for the Big Bend.
